Honey – The Powerhouse Of Vitamins And Minerals

Honey is a thick viscous brown or golden coloured liquid which has been used as far as human literature could carry it as a medicine and a sweetener. It is a powerhouse of carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins with traces of protein, 18 free amino acids and high concentration of various sugars. Dr. PeterMolan, professor of biochemistry at Waikato University, New Zealand states that, “Randomized trials have shown that honey may be more effective in controlling infection in burn wounds than silver sulfadiazine, the antibacterial ointment most widely used on burns in hospitals.

How is it formed?

This ambrosia is formed when honeybees collect nectar from flowers and store in their honey combs where it thickens into the honey we know it as. This honey can be collected from domesticated hives or from beehives in the wild. Beekeepers collect the honeycombs; they clear the wax and place the combs in an extractor to force honey out. The extracted honey has to be strained and filtered to clear wax pieces and any other impurities. The strained honey is then ready to use.

Honey is of two types- honeydew honey and floral honey obtained from aphids and flowers respectively. It is available in various forms, colours and textures depending on the source and whether it was processed or raw. The most familiar form is the liquid form; but honey is also available as a honeycomb, cut comb submerged in liquid honey, whipped honey which can be used as a spread and finally naturally crystallised honey.
