Colostrum – For Boosting Immunity*

Colostrum is the first pre-milk substance which all mammals produce before child birth. How is it Produced?

Colostrum is produced by all mammals but supplements are made from bovine colostrum and less commonly from goats. The best colostrum is collected within 24 hours of delivery of a calf is the most potent colostrum. It can be frozen and stored but the quality of frozen colostrum is slightly less than the fresh one.  According to FDA colostrum must be pasteurised for human consumption. It is subject to flash pasteurisation which removes harmful pathogens while retaining all the usefulpeptides and immunoglobulins. Next it is spray dried with a low pressure and low temperature indirect steam to produce high quality powder which retains all the essential proteins and growth factors in it.

Supplement Forms

As a supplement colostrum is available in sachets, capsules, drink mixes, chewable tablets, and spray liquids. The most preferred form though is powder or capsule because it can be easily absorbed.

The amount of colostrum to be taken is dependent on the general health, fitness and purpose for supplementing the diet. A normal healthy adult can take up to 1-3 g per day while an athlete can take upto 20 g per day. It is ideally taken on empty stomach atleast 30 minutes before a regular meal. Colostrum is contraindicated in certain cases, and it is recommended that the health practitioner is informed about other medication being taken at the same time.
