Overview of the plant and supplement

Saw palmetto is an extract of the fruit of Serenoa repens that belongs to the genus Serenoa and fan palm family that can grow as a shrub up to 10 feet. It is native to coastal regions of southern USA with warm climate. They have thorny stems with luscious leaves that grow horizontally. The plant produces white flowers that change to yellow berries, which in turn deep or blackish blue when ripe. The berries are rich in fatty acids, plant sterols, and flavonoids. They also contain polysaccharide sugars that can potentially boost immune system or mitigate inflammation.*

Saw palmetto is available in the form of dried berries, extracts in the form of powdered tablets and capsules, liquid tinctures, and liposterolic extracts. The standardized contents of the product must contain 85 to 95% fatty acids and sterols.

Uses

  • It is popularly used to decrease the effects of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), anon-cancerous condition with enlarged prostate glands that is common in men over the age of 40. This condition is characterized by painful urination, reduced urine flow, frequent urination at night-time and urinary impotency. Research has shown that saw palmetto plant-based compounds may change the testosterone levels in the body and potentially lower the production of enzyme that promote the enlargement of prostate cells. Saw palmetto is also suggested to have an anti-inflammatory effect on the prostate.The dosage for early stages of BPH is 160 mg, twice a day.*
  • It is also believed to reduce urinary tract infections and help problems in reproductive organs.*
  • According to this study, Saw palmetto may be able to enhance sexual drive and enlarge sexual organs such as breasts, ovaries and testicles. It may potentially reduce baldness in men.*
  • It is known to be an expectorant and may reduce irritation from cough, congestion, mucous and asthma.*
  • It can potentially strengthen the thyroid gland.*
  • It may promote digestive health by improving metabolism, stimulating appetite and aiding digestion.
